V.E.S.T.E.D High School Summer Academy – at CSULA

The V.E.S.T.E.D Summer Academy uses proven academic development activities of the MESA
(Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) Program at Cal State L.A. to enhance
and further develop academic, personal and interpersonal skills for students seeking a career
in Engineering, Science and Technology. The academy provides students an early entrance
opportunity by allowing them to enroll in select courses offered by the College of Engineering,
Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) at no cost to the student and earn college credits
while in high school.

Courses offered are: Engineering 154, “STEM Integration: Science and Math Applications
in Engineering Design and Problem-Solving”, Mechanical Engineering 101, “Introduction to
Energy Concepts in Mechanical Engineering”, and Mechanical Engineering 154, “Introduction
to Robotics”. Students attend class 5 days per week.

Other activities offered to V.E.S.T.E.D students are workshops on “How to Submit the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)” and “How to Apply to College”. Off campus
field trips organized in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers included a tour
of the Sepulveda Dam, Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Preserve and the Japanese Gardens in Van
Nuys, CA. Students also visited the Getty Center and Museum, California Science Center, and
Day Trip on the Los Angeles Metro. Lunch is provided each day for all students. A mandatory
orientation session is held for students and parents.

Program eligibility requirements are: High School Students in Grades 9 – 12; Good Academic
Standing; Demonstrated Interest in Careers in Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology.
Students must submit an application, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.

COSMOS – The California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science

The mission of COSMOS is to motivate the most creative minds of the new generation of prospective scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who will become leaders of California, the nation, and the world. The program aims to create a community of students who participate in and contribute to an intensive academic experience delivered by distinguished educators and scholars.

HANDS-ON SCIENCE CAMP - SUMMER 2012
Summer Camp registration opens February 20th!

Explore science and have an experience you'll never forget! Each summer, the California Science
Center offers science-rich, fun-filled experiences in our week-long science day camps (preschool-

8th grade). Choose from over 25 workshops including Living in Space, Skate Science, Invention
Convention, and many more. These innovative programs challenge children to look at the world in a
new way by exploring the science in our everyday lives. The fun is on June 18th- August 17th.
A limited number of scholarships are available to qualifying families.

SAME Engineering and Construction Camps
The Society of American Military Engineers offers a very unique series of engineering camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science and technical courses and are interested in pursuing engineering in college. These one–week camps are high energy, hands–on events for students from across the country and around the world.
