Euclid Elementary School
Euclid Elementary is a great STEM-Up™ Initiative Partner School. Through the initiative, Euclid students received homework agendas so they could organize their daily activities. They were also eager to take part in other STEM-Up Initiative opportunities such as the hand’s –on Geode activity with the entire 4th grade class. The students were excited to participate in this stimulating lesson plan which reinforced what they had learned in their own classroom. This exercise brought to life the many earth science careers available and allowed the students to examine gems and minerals first hand.
With encouragement from STEM-Up™ Initiative staff and Euclid Elementary Principal Olga Garcia, the Teachers organized themselves and the school to hold their very first school wide Science Fair on April 23rd, 2010. This was a magnificent event put together by a wonderful group of teachers who collaborated to make this a success. The Science Fair committee included the following teachers: Laura Selva, Jane Jue, Manuel Arzate, Sheila Abadi and leading the committee was Elizabeth Martin.
The theme of the Science Fair “Meet the Wild Bunch” proved to be the perfect backdrop to get students excited about hands-on learning. The committee appropriately adorned the multipurpose room with vines, animals and banana trees to resemble a wild jungle. They were successful in securing the participation of the entire school, including the magnet school on campus. All in all, 1,135 students took part in the science fair.
The First Annual Euclid Elementary School Science Fair was well received by students, teachers and parents alike. Each classroom from Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth grade worked on group projects which were submitted for judging. In addition, there were a few single entry contestants who held their own. The room was filled with well researched, organized poster boards that showed a clear understanding of the Scientific Method. Each grade level classroom competed against other classrooms in their respective grade and had the opportunity to win First, Second or Third prize on their projects. The entire student body received participating ribbons for their great efforts and collaboration with their peers.
There was excitement among the students when Principal Garcia announced the winners over the loudspeaker. Among those were:
First Place: Ms. Selva’s Pre-K classroom with their Metamorphosis project;
Mrs. Quintanar, Second grade with their Evaporation project and
Mr. LeClair’s Fifth grade class with their Weather/Temperature project.
Second Place: Mrs. Romero’s First grade class with Solid vs. Liquid project ,and
Mrs. Baraja’s Third grade class with Fish Scales.
Third Place: Mrs. Garcia’s Third grade class with Layers of Earth project, and
Melanie Castro and Ruth Ponoe in Fifth grade with their Mold project.
These were just a few of the contestants, but in the end every student was a winner because they dedicated themselves to a science project and made their school proud. Congratulations Euclid Students!
In the upcoming school year STEM-Up™ looks forward to continuing this wonderful partnership with Euclid Elementary and will bring additional fun and educative activities to its students as well as a Second Annual Science Fair next spring. As for now STEM-Up™ promotes STEM careers through our Role Model of the Month articles other community related activities.
