Escuela de En Foco

Stevenson Middle School

Robert Louis Stevenson Junior High School opened on February 1, 1926. Named for the famous
writer, Robert Louis Stevenson, the first student body used one of his most famous books,
Treasure Island, as the basis for establishing certain school traditions. The school was thought of
as a sturdy pirate ship with the teachers as its under-officers and the principal as its captain. Each

student was a member of the crew. “Forth and Forever Forward” became the motto of this crew
whose purpose it was to move forward in search of the treasures knowledge and achievement.

Stevenson Middle School with Principal Leo Gonzalez at the helm continues the role of the
captain moving his ship forward and improving student performance along the way through his
leadership, a wonderful team of teachers and administrators and its various partnerships and
student programs.

The STEM-Up™ initiative partners with Stevenson middle school to bring awareness,
inspiration, motivation and skills in the promotion of STEM college and career opportunities.
This year, the initiative worked with several teachers through professional development
workshops and brought programs such as Viva Technology to the campus. Students were able
to role play as engineers and scientists and interact with college student and professional role
models all while learning about the possible careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math.

Team members also took part in the Stevenson Middle School STAR Party on Thursday April
14th. Open to parents and students alike, participants took part in various activities such as the
astronomy dome, interaction with speaker from NASA and JPL and the ability to view through
large telescopes courtesy of the Sidewalk Astronomers of Los Angeles. They were also able to
take part in our own STEM-Up™ build-your-own Lunar Module activity. Students were given
various materials to work with to create a model of the lunar module that helped astronauts Neil
Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin land on the moon. Both students and parents enjoyed the activity
and became more interested in astronomy once they learned about the lunar module and space
travel. Students and parents also received different materials such as magazines, postcards, pens and posters promoting STEM.

In addition to the STEM-Up™ partnership, Stevenson middle school enjoys partnerships with
Impact, LA and the USC Iridescent Learning program all working with the school to improve the
access and awareness for STEM Careers.
